MATERIALS FOR CORES OF RESIN BONDED WHEELS

A frequent problem in the manufacture of RESIN BONDED DIAMOND WHEELS is bond failure between the cutting rim and the wheel body.  This sometimes becomes evident at the end of the molding stage, but more frequently, after curing the wheel.   Problems of this type are more likely to arise when the composition of the cutting rim and wheel body are substantially different in nature.   As a consequence, resin aluminum bodies is preferable due to the compatibility of the resins.

In wet or dry grinding applications the resin aluminum body is recommended to dissipate the heat buildup more readily than the bakelite body wheels.  The heat is absorbed back into the wheel instead of transferred on to the material being ground, causing what is commonly known as "HEAT CHECKING"? of the workpiece.  This heat dissipation will also enhance the diamond bond strength allowing for a longer lasting wheel and less likely to burn the diamond section.   Over the years, resin aluminum bodies have been developed to enhance properties such as dimensional stability, cross-breaking and impact strength.
